An end-of-year concert, a dance gala, a play performed two nights running: there is always a moment, after the applause, when someone says "we should keep something from this". And it is often the same person who then has to order twenty t-shirts before the dress rehearsal. Here is how to go about it without giving up your evenings.
Start from the group photo, not the logo
The temptation is to print the name of the group in big letters. That makes a work uniform. What really works is a photo of the group: the dress rehearsal, the final bow, the costumes still on. People recognise it, they look for themselves in it, and the garment becomes a keepsake rather than a uniform.
Three habits so it prints well:
- A photo taken under house lights, not backlit by a spotlight: faces stand out.
- A tight crop on the group. Big empty stages do not survive being shrunk onto a chest.
- An original file, not a screenshot from the WhatsApp group. That is the number one cause of blurry prints.
If you are unsure about the quality of the file, the note on the resolution to aim for in print will save you a round trip.
Which item for which moment
It does not all hang on the t-shirt. Depending on what you want to mark, the item changes:
- The t-shirt ($29.00) for what gets worn on stage or in the wings: rehearsals, summer workshop, the coach trip. The t-shirt personalised with the group photo comes in S to 2XL, unisex cut.
- The sweatshirt ($54.00) or the hoodie ($61.00) for winter rehearsals in a poorly heated hall. It is the garment teenagers actually keep, unlike the t-shirt.
- The tote bag ($38.00) for sheet music, dance shoes, props. It serves all through the following year.
- The mug ($25.00) to thank the choir director, the stage director, the sound engineer.
- The postcards ($25.00 for a set of 10, A6) to invite, to thank the families, or to leave a note for each singer.
The sum to do before launching the collection
This is the part that always jams: you have to announce a price per person before you have the money. Two things to know.
First, the price shown is the item price and shipping is added at checkout: a single item is enough, with shipping shown at checkout. No postage to divide by twenty at the end.
Second, a volume discount applies on its own in the basket: −10% from 10 items, −15% from 25. No code to enter. Items add up, so ten different items count as ten: eight t-shirts and two tote bags already reach the threshold. In practice, ten t-shirts go from $290.00 to $261.00, or $26.10 per singer.
One exception to know: the three wooden frames and the canvas are excluded from the discount, and do not count towards the threshold. If you want to give the choir director a frame, order it separately. For everything else, the page for personalised items in quantity gathers the products concerned.
Sizes, the real trap with a group
Collecting twenty sizes is the thankless task. A few shortcuts that work:
- One message, one channel, one deadline. No individual chasing.
- Offer only three sizes if the group is young: M, L, XL. Unisex cuts forgive a lot.
- For the undecided, round up: a slightly loose t-shirt gets worn, a tight one stays in a drawer. The size guide gives the flat measurements.
- If you do not know someone's size, the tote bag or the mug settles the question.
When to order
We quote 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere, production included. For a show, that means launching the order three weeks ahead: one week to collect sizes, one for production and delivery, one of margin in case a file has to be redone.
If the t-shirts are to be worn on stage, aim for the dress rehearsal, not opening night: you see the result before the audience does. And order one or two more than the headcount. There is always someone who joins mid-year, or a parent who wants one.
If you have no good group photo
It happens: blurry concert photos, nobody looking at the camera. In the online studio, you can also describe your design in a sentence and let the AI draw it, or send it a photo to change its style. A brass band as a vintage poster, a theatre troupe as a line drawing: three attempts are free, with no account to create. It is explained on the page about creating with AI.
One last point, to be upfront with the group: these items are personalised, so they are exempt from the standard right of withdrawal. Any printing, manufacturing or transport defect, on the other hand, is replaced or refunded. Check the design and the spelling of the first names carefully before confirming, it is the only real precaution to take.
