The short answerAn inside joke printed on an object is funny once, at the moment it is opened — so the real question is what the object is on day two. The photos that work are the ones where the joke is visible in the image: a face mid-sentence, a small disaster, a badly timed frame. Photos that need three sentences of context die in print. Keep text to four or five words. A mug is the safest object, because it is used in private; a t-shirt asks the person to explain the joke to strangers all day. And the line is simple: a joke about something the person chose is fine, a joke about something they did not choose is not.

1. The photo that works, and the one that falls flat

There are two kinds of funny photo, and only one of them survives being printed.

Funny in the image. A face caught mid-sentence. Someone asleep in an impossible position. A cake on the floor. A perfectly timed background. You look at it and you laugh, with no explanation. These print beautifully, because the object does the work.

Funny because of the story. A photo of an ordinary meal that happens to be the night of the thing that happened. This is the one that dies. In the group chat it is hilarious, because everyone has the context loaded. On a mug on a desk, it is a photo of a meal — and the owner has to explain it every time, which is the opposite of funny.

The test takes five seconds: show the photo to someone who was not there. If they smile, print it. If they ask "so what is it?", keep it in the chat.

2. The text, if there is any

Four or five words. Genuinely.

A caption that has to be read twice has already stopped being funny, and there are two physical reasons for brevity here: on a mug, the handle hides part of any long line, and the print is read from about thirty centimetres, where a paragraph is just grey texture.

If the joke really needs a sentence, put the sentence in the card that comes with the gift and leave the object clean. The card gets read once, which is exactly the right number of times for a long joke.

Add the text into the image itself before uploading with any phone editing tool — the preview then shows exactly what gets printed, including whether the handle eats the last word.

3. Which object, by joke

The joke is…Then…From
Between two of you, or within one teamA mug. Used in private or at a desk among people who already know. The safest object by a distance.$23.00
A running gag the whole group sharesA t-shirt — but only for an occasion where everyone is wearing one. Not as a solo gift.$23.00
Something that needs to circulateTen postcards. Everyone gets one, nobody has to keep it on display.$26.00
Mild enough to be seen in publicA tote bag. Strangers will read it — which is either the point or the problem.$35.00

The general rule: the more public the object, the milder the joke has to be. A mug is seen by four people; a tote bag is seen by four hundred, and a t-shirt is worn by someone who has to answer for it all day.

4. When the whole group is in on it

Same design, several objects, one order. From 10 items in the basket, 10% comes off automatically; from 25, 15%. Nothing to enter.

One practical warning from experience: agree the photo before anybody orders anything. In a group of eight there are always three candidate photos and two people who hate the one that wins. That negotiation takes a week; the printing takes days.

5. The line

Worth saying plainly, because this is the one place a personalised gift can actually go wrong.

A joke about something the person chose is fine. A haircut they picked, a shirt they bought, a decision they defended loudly. They own it, and the joke is affectionate by construction.

A joke about something they did not choose is not. Their body, an illness, a break-up, a job they lost, a family situation. However warmly it is meant, the object is permanent and it sits in their kitchen. The room laughs on the day; the mug is still there in March.

And a simpler filter that catches almost everything: if you are not sure whether it is a photo they like, it is not the photo.

6. Images that are not yours

A film still, an album cover, a cartoon character, a brand logo, a meme template drawn by someone — all of these belong to someone, and you confirm when ordering that you hold the rights to the image you upload.

It is also, in practice, a downgrade: an inside joke with your own faces in it is funnier than the same joke wearing a stranger's picture. If the joke needs a character, redraw it badly yourselves — the bad drawing usually becomes the joke.

In short

Before you order, the preview is computed in your own browser and nothing is transmitted; the print file goes to the printer at payment and is deleted after dispatch. Personalised items are exempt from the standard European right of withdrawal (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16(c)), and anything that arrives damaged is reprinted at no charge.

Frequently asked questions

Which photo carries an inside joke?
One where the joke is visible in the image itself. A photo that needs three sentences of explanation is funny in the group chat and flat on an object. Show it to someone who was not there: if they ask "so what is it?", keep it in the chat.
How much text should I put on it?
Four or five words at most. A caption read twice stops being funny, and on a mug the handle hides part of any long line. Put the long version in the card.
Mug or t-shirt?
A mug is much safer: used in private, or at a desk among people who already know. A t-shirt asks the person to explain the joke to strangers all day.
Everyone in the group wants one. How does that work?
Same design, several objects, one order — from 10 items 10% comes off automatically, 15% from 25. Agree the photo first; that is the step that takes a week.
Where is the line?
A joke about something the person chose is fine. A joke about something they did not choose is not, however affectionately meant — the object is permanent and it sits in their kitchen.
Can I use a meme or a film still?
No. Those belong to someone, and you confirm when ordering that you hold the rights. Your own faces are funnier anyway.
