The three sizes, and the wall that goes with each
The frame is black wood and arrives ready to hang. All that's left is the size, and what decides it is how far away people will be when they look at it.
- A4 (21 × 29.7 cm, about 8.3 × 11.7 in), from $55.00: seen up close. Desk, shelf, bedside table, a small patch of wall. Right for a portrait, a couple, a pet.
- 30 × 40 cm (about 12 × 16 in), $75.00: seen in passing. Hallway, entrance, above a desk. It takes a family photo of four to six people.
- 50 × 70 cm (about 20 × 28 in), $131.00: visible from the other side of the room. Above a sofa, a headboard, a fireplace. The size for group photos and landscapes.
Which photo for which size
The same photo won't suit every size. Three things to look at before you choose:
- Sharpness: the bigger the frame, the more the flaws show. A phone photo taken in good light holds up well at A4; for a 50 × 70, use the largest original you can find. Our guide to resolution tells you which size it will hold, and the Make the photo sharper (AI) button helps if it's a little small.
- Orientation and proportions: the 30 × 40 is close to the shape of a phone photo, so it crops very little. A4 and 50 × 70 are slightly longer: leave some space around heads so the crop doesn't touch them.
- The number of people: one or two faces at A4, a family at 30 × 40, a group of ten or more at 50 × 70. At A4, a group of fifteen gives faces too small to recognise.

Frame or canvas?
The canvas on a wooden stretcher, from $35.00, comes in 20 × 20, 20 × 30 and 30 × 30 cm. It hangs without a frame, in a small size.
- Go for the canvas for a square photo (a profile picture or a social media post: 20 × 20 or 30 × 30), for a camera photo in 3:2 format (20 × 30), or for a smaller budget.
- Go for the frame as soon as you want anything bigger than 30 × 30, for a group photo, or for a more classic look that matches other frames already on the wall.
- Both together: a large framed photo in the middle and two small square canvases either side make a complete wall.

Mistakes to avoid
- A large size with a small photo: an image saved from a chat won't hold up at 50 × 70. Check the preview and the resolution first.
- The whole group at A4: beyond four or five people, move up to 30 × 40.
- Heads too close to the edge: cropping to the frame's proportions can cut them off. Choose a photo with some room around the subject.
- Choosing a size without measuring: tape a sheet of A4 or a piece of cardboard to the wall before you order, and you'll see if it's too small.
- Too much text on the photo: on a frame, a name and a date are enough; the rest goes on the back or in a card.
