The short answerA tote bag print is large and flat, so it forgives nothing. Crouch to your dog's eye level — a photo taken standing up flattens the skull and stretches the muzzle. Fill the frame with the head and chest rather than the whole animal in a garden. Shoot in daylight with the light behind you, never backlit, and use burst mode: a muzzle that moves during the exposure prints as a smear no filter repairs. Choose the bag colour against the coat, not against your taste — a black dog disappears on a black bag, a cream dog disappears on natural cotton. The bag is cotton with long handles, 38 × 42 cm (15 × 16.5 in), printed to order, $35.00 shipping included.

A tote bag is the friendliest object in this catalogue and the least forgiving. Friendliest, because it goes out in the street: a mug is seen by four people, a bag is seen by four hundred, and strangers stop you to ask about the dog. Least forgiving, because the print is big, flat and lit by daylight — every flaw the phone screen hid comes back at full size.

So the whole question is the photograph. Here is what actually decides it.

1. The muzzle, and the height you shoot from

This is the single biggest improvement available, it costs nothing, and almost nobody does it: get down to the dog's height.

A photo taken standing up looks down on the animal. The skull flattens, the muzzle stretches towards the lens, the body shrinks behind the head. It reads as a distorted animal, and printed at 25 cm across, it looks like a mistake rather than a style.

Crouch, kneel, or lie down until the lens is level with the dog's eyes. The proportions come back immediately, and so does the expression, because you are now looking at the animal the way another dog would. Nothing else in this page has as much effect for as little work.

How much of the dog should be in the frame?

Head and chest. Not the whole animal, not the garden, not the sofa. The print is roughly the size of a sheet of A4 on the front of the bag; a dog photographed from six metres away becomes a small shape in the middle of a lawn, and enlarging it just shows you the pixels.

If the only photo you have is a wide one, crop tight to the head before you judge it. A small sharp crop beats a large soft one every single time.

2. Tongue out: it depends on sharpness, not on charm

A tongue out is the most requested and the most risky detail. When the photo is sharp, it is exactly what makes the bag: the dog looks alive, mid-breath, happy. When the dog was panting, the tongue is moving faster than anything else in the frame, and it is the first thing that smears into a pink blur.

So the rule is simple: shoot a burst, then pick the frame where the tongue has a clean edge. If no frame in the burst has one, choose a closed-mouth shot. A calm, sharp dog beats a joyful, blurred one at this size.

3. Movement, and where blur really comes from

Almost every unusable dog photo fails for one of two reasons, and they are not the same problem.

Either way the detail was never recorded, so no editing tool invents it back. Burst mode is the real answer: hold the shutter, take twelve frames, keep one. It costs nothing and it changes everything.

The bag colour, chosen against the coat

This is where people follow their taste and regret it. The print is not a sticker sitting on top of the fabric — it is ink in the fibre, and the fabric shows through the light areas. So the coat and the bag have to disagree.

Your dogBag colour that worksBag colour to avoid
Black, dark brown, black-and-tanNatural, white, sandBlack, navy
Cream, white, pale goldenNavy, black, redNatural, white
Red, fawn, ginger (shiba, vizsla, golden)Navy or natural — both workRed
Grey, blue merle, brindleNatural or whiteNavy

One test that takes five seconds: squint at the photo on your phone until it blurs. If you can still see where the dog ends and the background begins, the contrast is enough. If it turns into one shape, change the bag colour.

Framing a big dog and a small dog

A great dane and a chihuahua do not want the same crop, for a reason that has nothing to do with size on the bag.

A large dog has a long muzzle, so shooting from slightly to the side rather than dead-on shows the shape of the head instead of pointing the nose at the lens. Three-quarter view, eye level, head and chest.

A small dog has a short muzzle and big eyes, which is exactly what people find endearing — so go closer, and go lower still. With a small dog, the difference between a photo taken from your waist and one taken from the floor is enormous.

Long-haired dogs need contrast more than anything: fur without a defined edge disappears into a similar background. Put them against a plain wall, or shoot outside against grass.

“Printed in Europe”: what that actually means here

Nothing is stocked. When you order, the file goes to Gelato, a network of printing sites, and your bag is produced at the site closest to your delivery address. An order delivered in Europe is printed in Europe; one delivered in the United States is printed in the United States. That is why there is never a "sold out", why shipping is inside the price rather than added at checkout, and why it takes days rather than hours.

Count 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere. The estimated arrival date is shown on the page before you order.

Care

Treated that way, a cotton tote outlasts most of what else you own. Treated badly — hot wash, tumble dried — the print fades in a season, and that is almost always what happened when someone says a printed bag "did not last".

And if a tote bag is not the right object

Same photo, different use.

In short

Before you order, the preview is computed in your own browser and nothing is transmitted. Personalised items are exempt from the standard European right of withdrawal (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16(c)), which is why the preview shows the real crop before payment — and why anything that arrives damaged is reprinted at no charge. You must hold the rights to the photo you upload; a photo you took yourself is fine, a professional portrait belongs to the photographer.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the printed area on the tote bag?
The bag is cotton with long handles, 38 × 42 cm (15 × 16.5 in), and the print sits on the front panel. It is a large, flat surface, which is why the photo has to be sharp: unlike a mug, nothing is hidden by a curve or a handle.
Which bag colour should I choose for my dog?
Choose against the coat, not against your taste. A black or dark brown dog disappears on a black bag; a cream, white or pale golden dog disappears on natural cotton. Pick the bag that contrasts most, and the photo reads from across the street.
Should the dog have its tongue out?
It depends on sharpness, not on charm. A tongue out is expressive when the photo is sharp; if the dog was panting and moving, the tongue is the first thing that smears. In doubt, take the sharper frame of the burst.
Do I need to remove the background?
No, and it is better not to. Fur has no clean outline, so automatic cut-out tools leave ragged edges that print as a halo. A plain wall or a lawn behind the dog beats any cut-out.
Can I put two dogs on the same bag?
Yes, if both fit side by side without becoming small. Photograph them at their shared eye level, both facing the camera. One dog behind the other works much less well.
How do I wash it?
Cold wash, inside out, no tumble dryer, and no iron directly on the print. The print is in the fibre rather than on top of it, but heat is what ages it fastest.
Where is it printed and how long does it take?
Printed to order by Gelato, as close as possible to the delivery address, then dispatched: 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere. Shipping is included in the price shown.
