It’s rare to arrive at a housewarming party empty-handed. And it’s rare to leave thinking you’ve found the idea of the century: a candle, a plant, a bottle. The problem isn’t the budget; it’s that these gifts don’t tell a story. A personalized object with a photo, however, does. Here is how to go about it, concretely.
Why a photo works so well for a housewarming
Moving in means empty walls. New owners or tenants spend the first few weeks staring at large white surfaces, wondering what to put on them. You arrive with something that can be set down or hung up the very same evening: you aren’t filling another cupboard, you are helping them settle in.
And a photo chosen by you has a value that no store-bought object has: it proves that you know the person. It’s the only thing that cannot be improvised at the last minute in a shop.
Which photo to choose (and which to avoid)
The right photo for a housewarming is almost never a posed portrait. Look instead in these three directions:
- The place before. The old apartment, the street, the local café. No one thinks to photograph it before moving out, and everyone regrets not doing so.
- The group. An evening out, a weekend, a trip with friends who will also be at the housewarming party. The object becomes a conversation starter as soon as it is unwrapped.
- The pet. The family cat or dog, in close-up. It’s the subject that gets the most laughs, and it’s the one people keep the longest.
To avoid: social media screenshots, photos sent via messaging apps (they are compressed and become blurry when printed), and images found on the internet. Always use the original, the one in your phone’s camera roll. If you aren’t sure whether your file will handle the size, our page on photo resolution for printing provides the benchmarks in a minute.
Which object for which type of housewarming
The choice depends mainly on how close you are to the person and what you want to happen to the gift.
- A photo frame, to mark the occasion. The 30 × 40 cm frame is €47.90, black wood, 200g matte paper, delivered ready-assembled: there’s nothing to put together, just a nail to hammer in. It is also available in 21 × 29.7 cm for €39.90 for an entryway or hallway, and in 50 × 70 cm for €97.90 when you’re aiming for the living room wall.
- A mug, for a light but thoughtful gift. €16.90, 325ml ceramic, dishwasher safe. It’s the gift you give a colleague who is moving without overdoing it, and it gets used every morning.
- A tote bag, for neighborhood errands. €29.90, cotton, long handles, 38 × 42 cm. Immediately useful when discovering a new market and a new bakery.
- Postcards, for the new address. The pack of 10 in A6, 300g paper, is €21.90. Alternative idea: print a photo of the new building's facade, and the residents will send them out themselves to announce their change of address.
When to order to be on time
Housewarming parties are often scheduled three to four weeks after moving in, and you’re rarely notified more than ten days in advance. The site advertises 5 to 10 working days, production and delivery included. So count on a week and leave yourself a buffer: as soon as the date is set, order. A personalized gift is not an item in stock that you pick up at a shop the day before — everything is printed to order, in Europe.
The price displayed is the price paid: delivery is included, even for a single item. The shop delivers to France, the EU, the UK, Switzerland and the United States.
The practical side, in three minutes
There is no account to create and no software to install. You open the online workshop, you upload your photo, you move it on screen until the framing suits you, you add text if you like — a move-in date, an address, an inside joke — and you order. Your photo does not leave your browser until the moment of payment.
A word of honesty: because the object is made especially for you, there is no right of withdrawal (Article L221-28 3° of the Consumer Code). However, the slightest defect in printing, manufacturing, or transport will be replaced or refunded. You can see how the objects are produced on our manufacturing page.
The little detail that changes everything
Add the move-in date in small print under the photo. Two lines, nothing more. Five years from now, it is this detail that will transform the object into a landmark: “Oh yes, that was the apartment on Rue des Vignes.” A candle will never do that.
