The short answerThe real problem is sequencing: people want to give something in the first days, when no usable photo exists. Two good answers — give the parents something they will use to make it (a pack of postcards that becomes their birth announcements), or wait three or four weeks. Nobody minds: the flood of gifts arrives in week one, and the parcel in week five is the one that gets noticed. Newborn photos print well when they are close, in daylight near a window, with no flash — and a newborn's skin is blotchy for the first fortnight, so a photo at three or four weeks is kinder. Write the first name and the date; weight and length date quickly.

1. The gift arrives before the photo

This is the whole difficulty, and most gift lists ignore it. A personalised gift needs a photo. A birth produces a baby and, for about a fortnight, no photograph anyone would print.

You have three options and only two of them are good.

2. When you already have a photo of the baby

If the photo exists — because you are the parents, or because it has just landed in the family group chat — a new baby photo gift is simple. Upload it, see it straight away on each object, and pick the one that suits the person receiving it.

What makes the photo work: sharp, in daylight, with the baby's face filling a good part of the frame. If it is slightly soft, the editor's "Make the photo sharper (AI)" button can often rescue it; to keep only the baby on a plain background, "Remove background (AI)" is free. Either way the preview shows exactly what will be printed before you pay, and the ready-made themes add a first name without any layout work.

On a tight budget, start with the mug. If several relatives each want their own object, 10% comes off from 10 items and 15% from 25 (frames do not count towards the discount).

3. Which newborn photos actually print

Newborn photography has one rule and several consequences: daylight, close, no flash.

Use the original file from the camera roll — a photo sent round the family on a messaging app has already been compressed, and on a framed print that shows.

4. Making your own birth announcements

If you are the parents rather than the guest, this is the practical use of the same tool.

A pack is ten copies of the same card, A6 (10.5 × 14.8 cm (4.1 × 5.8 in)), printed full-bleed on the front, back left blank, on 300 gsm uncoated card. Uncoated matters: it takes ballpoint, fountain pen and pencil without smudging, which a glossy photo card refuses. So the photo goes on the front, the details go on the back, and the handwritten line goes wherever you like.

$26.00 for ten, shipping included. If you need thirty, order three packs — from 10 items in the basket 10% comes off automatically.

What to put on it: first name, date of birth, and that is genuinely enough. Weight and length are a convention that dates within a year. A long message ages worse than a short one.

5. Which object, by who is giving

WhoWhat worksFrom
GrandparentsA framed print — displayed, and the one gift that is still on a wall at the child's eighteenth birthday$55.00
Close friends, colleaguesA mug for each parent. Used every morning during the months when mornings are hard.$23.00

Anyone wanting something practicalA cotton tote — a changing bag that is not covered in cartoon animals$35.00

6. Are you allowed to print a photo of someone else's child?

Ask the parents. In the European Union a photograph of an identifiable person is personal data, and for a child the parents decide — there is no exception for family or for good intentions.

Beyond the law, asking is how you find out which photo they are comfortable having other people see. Parents are often surprisingly particular about that in the first months, and they are entitled to be.

One more: photographs taken during a newborn studio session belong to the photographer. The prints you bought are yours; the right to reprint the image is not.

7. When to order

Count 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US and up to 15 elsewhere, printing included. If the gift is for a christening, a naming day or a first birthday, work backwards from the date and add a week. If it is simply "for the new baby", there is no deadline at all — and arriving late is, for once, an advantage.

In short

Before you order, the preview is computed in your own browser and nothing is transmitted; the print file goes to the printer at payment and is deleted after dispatch. Personalised items are exempt from the standard European right of withdrawal (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16(c)), and anything that arrives damaged is reprinted at no charge.

Frequently asked questions

How do I give a personalised gift when there is no photo yet?
Give something the parents will use to make it — a pack of postcards that becomes their birth announcements — or wait three or four weeks. The flood of gifts arrives in week one; the parcel in week five is the one that gets noticed.
Which newborn photos print well?
Close, in daylight near a window, no flash. A newborn's skin is blotchy for the first fortnight and prints as it looks, so three or four weeks is usually kinder. Hands, feet and a sleeping face beat a full body shot.
Can I make my own birth announcements?
Yes — a pack of ten A6 postcards, printed full-bleed on the front, back left blank, on 300 gsm uncoated card. Uncoated is what lets a pen write on the back without smudging.
Am I allowed to print a photo of someone else's child?
Ask the parents. In the EU a photo of an identifiable person is personal data and for a child the parents decide — and asking is how you learn which photo they are happy for others to see.
What should I write on it?
The first name and the date. Weight and length date quickly; a sentence about the parents ages worse than either.
How long does it take to arrive?
5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere, printing included, shipping included in the price shown.
What is an affordable personalised new baby gift?
A mug with the baby's photo, at $23.00 shipping included, with no minimum order. A pack of ten postcards ($26.00) works as announcements or thank-you cards. From 10 items 10% comes off, 15% from 25; frames do not count towards the discount.
How fast can a personalised baby gift be delivered?
5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US and up to 15 elsewhere, printing included, from payment. The quickest route is to order the day the photo arrives: the preview is immediate and ordering takes a few minutes. For a fixed date such as a christening, work backwards and add a week.
