Ideas by age

The same idea doesn't land the same way at 25 and at 70.

18 to 30: the group's running joke on a t-shirt, the big-number template (« Gros chiffre » in the studio) on a sweatshirt. See 20th birthday gifts and 30th birthday gifts.
40 and 50: his passion cut out on a cap, or ten years of photos in a frame. See 40th and 50th.
60 and over: his grandchildren on a mug, his garden or his town on a canvas, $35.00. See 60th birthday gifts.
A teenager: clothing comes in adult sizes only, S to 2XL, with no children's sizes. An older teen often fits an S or an M; otherwise, choose a mug or a cap.

Which photo and text, depending on who he is

The right photo depends on how you know him.

A friend: the group photo from a holiday, or his worst face on a night out, with the group's name.
Your dad: him with his grandchildren, or him as a young man in the album photo he's forgotten about. The Polaroid template suits him.
Your brother: the childhood photo he hates, on a mug.
A colleague: the team photo with the Team template. See birthday gifts for a colleague.

Keep the text to two or three words: a nickname, an age, a date. The free Remove background (AI) button isolates the subject of a busy photo, and Make the photo sharper (AI) rescues one that's too small.

Mistakes to avoid

The "gift for men" that would suit anyone: without his photo or his passion, a personalised item loses its whole point.
A joke too private for clothing: he has to be able to wear it in front of other people. To get the balance right, see our guide to in-jokes.
Guessing the size: check the label on something he wears and the size guide, or choose a mug or a frame.
Ordering too late: printing and delivery take 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere. It can be delivered straight to him.
