1. Why a print ages — and why it is not what people think
Almost every “the print faded” story comes down to the same two culprits, and neither of them is the ink.
- Heat. Hot water and, above all, a tumble dryer. Heat relaxes the bond between ink and fibre and, on cotton, shrinks the garment slightly at the same time.
- Friction. A dryer drum, a rough cycle with jeans and zips, a scourer on a mug. Abrasion wears the top of the fibre, and the image lives on the top of the fibre.
Direct-to-garment printing puts the ink into the cotton rather than on it. That is why it feels like fabric and not like plastic, why it never cracks along a fold, and why the failure mode is a gentle softening over years rather than a sudden peel.
2. T-shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie, tote bag
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Cold wash, or 30 °C (86 °F) at most | 60 °C or a boil wash |
| Turn the garment inside out first | Wash it print-side out with jeans and zips |
| Ordinary detergent, normal cycle | Bleach, or anything with an optical brightener |
| Air-dry, ideally flat or on a hanger | Tumble dryer |
| Iron inside out, or around the print | Iron directly on the image |
| Leave softener out | Pour softener over the printed area every wash |
The 150 gsm cotton of the t-shirt and the 280 gsm fleece of the sweatshirt and hoodie behave the same way here. So does the cotton tote bag, which has the easiest life of the four: it is washed rarely and never tumbled.
3. The first wash, and the thing everyone notices
A direct-to-garment print sits on a pre-treatment that holds the ink while it cures. Some of that pre-treatment rinses out on the first wash, and the image can look a shade softer afterwards — less glossy, more like part of the shirt.
That is a one-off. It settles after the first wash and does not continue. If a print keeps getting lighter wash after wash, the cause is the temperature or the dryer, not the ink.
4. The mug
Ceramic, 325 ml, dishwasher and microwave safe — that is what the product is rated for, and you can use it that way without thinking about it.
If you want the image to stay new-looking for as long as possible, two habits help: wash it by hand when it is convenient, and never attack it with an abrasive scourer or a scouring powder. A dishwasher is fine; sandpaper is not.
5. Paper: postcards and framed prints
The postcards are A6, 10.5 × 14.8 cm (4.1 × 5.8 in), printed on uncoated 300 gsm card. The framed print is an inkjet print on 200 gsm matte paper in a pine frame, delivered mounted and ready to hang.
Neither is fragile, but both share one weakness: ultraviolet light. A print on a wall in full afternoon sun will shift over a few years; the same print on an adjacent wall will not. Damp is the second thing to avoid — a bathroom is not a good home for a paper print.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight. That single choice does more than anything else.
- Dust the glass, not the print.
- Never wipe the paper itself with a damp cloth.
6. The canvas
Printed on canvas over an FSC-certified wooden stretcher, 2 cm deep, with the hanging fixture supplied. It has no glass in front of it, which is what makes it look good and also what makes it slightly more exposed.
- Dust it with a dry, soft cloth — a microfibre cloth, or a clean duster.
- No water, no glass cleaner, no solvent, ever, on the printed surface.
- Out of direct sunlight, and away from a radiator or a damp wall, which can slacken the stretcher over time.
7. What is covered if something goes wrong
A printed item is made to order with your photo, so it is exempt from the standard European right of withdrawal (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16(c)). That is not the same as “no guarantee”: anything that arrives with a printing fault, a manufacturing defect or transport damage is reprinted or refunded at no charge. A print that has been through a 60 °C wash and a tumble dryer is wear, not a fault — which is the whole reason this page exists.
