The short answerFor a t-shirt with your pet on it: a sharp photo in which the animal fills the frame, and a shirt colour that contrasts with its coat — a black dog on a light shirt, a white cat on navy or black. The Gildan 64000 Softstyle t-shirt is $23.00, shipping included, sizes S to 2XL. For winter, the sweatshirt ($45.00) or the hoodie ($50.00).

The photo

The best photo is not the prettiest one, it is the clearest: the animal facing you or at three-quarters, taken at its eye level, in full daylight. On a t-shirt, the print area is roughly the size of an A4 sheet (a little smaller than US Letter): a face that fills half the photo stays recognisable from across the room.

Crop first: keep the head and shoulders, lose the sofa and the floorboards.
A black pet is best photographed outdoors, in the shade, never with flash: which photos print well on a t-shirt.
Add its name underneath if you like: two words, a legible font.

The t-shirt colour

Dark coat (black Labrador, black cat, dachshund): white, cream or light grey t-shirt.
Light coat (Samoyed, white cat, golden retriever): navy, black or dark green t-shirt.
Mixed coat (shepherd, tabby, tricolour): white works almost every time.

The trapA black cat on a black t-shirt vanishes: the print does not draw an outline. The preview in the studio shows you before you pay — change the colour in one click.
