Some owners celebrate a birthday their animal never had. Many more remember the day the dog jumped out of the car at home for the first time, or the day the cat came out from under the bed. That date has a name in some countries — “gotcha day” — and it is a better occasion for a gift than a birthday, because it has a story.
1. The idea: day one, next to today
A single nice photo of a pet is a nice object. Two photos side by side are a story. The first-day photo is usually bad — blurry, badly lit, a frightened animal in a corner — and that is exactly why it works: next to a relaxed portrait a year later, it shows what changed.
- Same place, if possible. The same sofa, the same basket, the same doorstep. It makes the difference obvious.
- Same framing. Head and shoulders in both, or whole animal in both.
- A short line of text. The name and the date: “Home since 12 March 2024”, or simply “Day 1 / Day 365”.
2. Finding the photo from the first day
It is almost always in the phone, just buried. Three ways to find it quickly:
- Search the photo library by date or by month.
- Search by place — the shelter, the breeder's town.
- Most phones recognise animals: search “dog” or “cat” and scroll to the oldest.
If the photo only exists in a conversation, ask the person who took it for the original file. An image that went through a messaging app is compressed and prints soft — our guide on resolution for printing gives the numbers.

A black dog or cat needs a little more care with light and contrast: photographing a black dog or cat explains the four fixes that work.
4. When to order
Everything is printed to order at the partner site closest to the delivery address; nothing is stocked. Allow 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere. Order about two weeks before the date and you are safe.
5. Before you order
The preview is computed in your own browser and nothing is transmitted until payment; the print file is deleted after dispatch. Personalised items are exempt from the standard European right of withdrawal (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16(c)); anything that arrives damaged or faulty is reprinted at no charge.
