1. The gift arrives before the photo
This is the whole difficulty, and most gift lists ignore it. A personalised gift needs a photo. A birth produces a baby and, for about a fortnight, no photograph anyone would print.
You have three options and only two of them are good.
- Give the parents the means to make it. A pack of ten postcards is the cleanest version: they choose the photo when they are ready, and the object becomes their birth announcements. It turns a gift into something useful at exactly the moment nothing is useful.
- Wait three or four weeks. This is the underrated one. Everything arrives in the first week — flowers, babygros, three identical soft toys — and none of it is remembered. A parcel in week five, when the house has gone quiet and the visitors have stopped, is the gift people talk about.
- Use a pregnancy photo. Occasionally right, often not. Ask first: it is a photo some parents love and others do not want printed.
2. When you already have a photo of the baby
If the photo exists — because you are the parents, or because it has just landed in the family group chat — a new baby photo gift is simple. Upload it, see it straight away on each object, and pick the one that suits the person receiving it.
- A framed print for the nursery or the living room — $55.00, 21 × 29.7 cm (8.3 × 11.7 in), delivered ready to hang. The photo gift that is still on the wall years later.
- A mug for the parents — $23.00, shipping included. The lowest budget for a real gift with the baby's photo on it, and the one used every morning.
- Postcards as announcements or thank-you cards — $26.00 for a pack of ten. The photo on the front, a handwritten line on the back for everyone who sent something.
- A tote bag — $35.00, for whoever carries the nappies.
What makes the photo work: sharp, in daylight, with the baby's face filling a good part of the frame. If it is slightly soft, the editor's "Make the photo sharper (AI)" button can often rescue it; to keep only the baby on a plain background, "Remove background (AI)" is free. Either way the preview shows exactly what will be printed before you pay, and the ready-made themes add a first name without any layout work.
On a tight budget, start with the mug. If several relatives each want their own object, 10% comes off from 10 items and 15% from 25 (frames do not count towards the discount).
3. Which newborn photos actually print
Newborn photography has one rule and several consequences: daylight, close, no flash.
- Near a window, not under a ceiling light. Indoor evening light is yellow and dim, and it makes a newborn look ill in print.
- Never flash. It is unpleasant for the baby and it flattens everything.
- Close. Hands, feet, a sleeping face. A whole body in a large cot is a small pink shape at print size.
- Wait a little. A newborn's skin is blotchy, reddish and sometimes peeling for the first two weeks. That is normal and it prints exactly as it looks. At three or four weeks the face has settled.
Use the original file from the camera roll — a photo sent round the family on a messaging app has already been compressed, and on a framed print that shows.
4. Making your own birth announcements
If you are the parents rather than the guest, this is the practical use of the same tool.
A pack is ten copies of the same card, A6 (10.5 × 14.8 cm (4.1 × 5.8 in)), printed full-bleed on the front, back left blank, on 300 gsm uncoated card. Uncoated matters: it takes ballpoint, fountain pen and pencil without smudging, which a glossy photo card refuses. So the photo goes on the front, the details go on the back, and the handwritten line goes wherever you like.
$26.00 for ten, shipping included. If you need thirty, order three packs — from 10 items in the basket 10% comes off automatically.
What to put on it: first name, date of birth, and that is genuinely enough. Weight and length are a convention that dates within a year. A long message ages worse than a short one.
5. Which object, by who is giving
| Who | What works | From |
|---|---|---|
| Grandparents | A framed print — displayed, and the one gift that is still on a wall at the child's eighteenth birthday | $55.00 |
| Close friends, colleagues | A mug for each parent. Used every morning during the months when mornings are hard. | $23.00 |
| The parents themselves | Postcards, as announcements | $26.00 |
| Anyone wanting something practical | A cotton tote — a changing bag that is not covered in cartoon animals | $35.00 |
6. Are you allowed to print a photo of someone else's child?
Ask the parents. In the European Union a photograph of an identifiable person is personal data, and for a child the parents decide — there is no exception for family or for good intentions.
Beyond the law, asking is how you find out which photo they are comfortable having other people see. Parents are often surprisingly particular about that in the first months, and they are entitled to be.
One more: photographs taken during a newborn studio session belong to the photographer. The prints you bought are yours; the right to reprint the image is not.
7. When to order
Count 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US and up to 15 elsewhere, printing included. If the gift is for a christening, a naming day or a first birthday, work backwards from the date and add a week. If it is simply "for the new baby", there is no deadline at all — and arriving late is, for once, an advantage.
In short
- The gift is wanted before the photo exists. Give the means, or wait a month.
- Daylight, close, no flash. Three or four weeks is kinder than three days.
- First name and date. Not weight and length.
- Ask the parents before printing their child.
- Postcards make the best self-printed birth announcements — uncoated card takes a pen.
Before you order, the preview is computed in your own browser and nothing is transmitted; the print file goes to the printer at payment and is deleted after dispatch. Personalised items are exempt from the standard European right of withdrawal (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16(c)), and anything that arrives damaged is reprinted at no charge.
