Photographing the drawing properly

No scanner needed. A phone does the job, as long as you get four things right.

Daylight: near a window, out of direct sun. Avoid the flash and evening lamplight, which turn the paper yellow and put glare on felt-tip colours.
Flat: lay the drawing on a table, not against a wall. If the paper curls, weigh the corners down with books, just outside the frame.
Straight on: hold the phone parallel to the sheet, directly above it. Taken at an angle, the drawing turns into a trapezium.
The whole sheet: include the entire page with a little margin around it. You crop in the studio afterwards, not the other way round.

Watch out for your own shadow: stand with the window beside you at an angle, not between the light and the drawing. And take two or three shots, then keep the sharpest.

Rescuing an average photo

Was the drawing snapped in a hurry, or did it arrive through a messaging app that compressed it? The studio has two buttons for that.

Make the photo sharper (AI): for a photo that is too small and might print blurry. Our guide to photo resolution explains what to look at.
Remove background (AI), free: it cuts out the subject right in your browser. On a high-contrast drawing (black felt tip, bold colours on white paper) it can remove the paper and keep only the drawing. Give it a try: depending on the drawing, it works or it doesn't. If you don't like the result, keep the whole sheet; that looks lovely too.

Because the photo is only sent when you order, you can try as many times as you like without any risk.

What to print it on, and for whom

A drawing suits almost anything. Pick the product according to who will receive it.

At Christmas, the Gift tag template («Étiquette» in the studio, with "For you") or the Family template («Famille») dresses up the drawing in one click. Printing and delivery take 5 to 10 working days in Europe: for Friday 25 December, order before Thursday 10 December, and have it delivered straight to Grandma's if she lives far away. Outside the UK, Europe and the US, allow extra time, up to 15 working days, and aim to order by early December.

Do I need to scan the drawing? No. A phone photo is enough if it is taken flat, straight on and in daylight. If the photo is too small, the Make the photo sharper (AI) button helps.

Can I remove the white paper background? Try the free Remove background (AI) button: on a high-contrast drawing it can take out the paper. Results vary from one drawing to another; if you don't like it, keep the whole sheet.

Can I print the drawing on a children's t-shirt? No, our t-shirts come in adult sizes only, from S to 2XL. The drawing is worn by a parent or a grandparent.
