The short answerTo print a photo on a t-shirt, choose an image whose subject fills a good part of the frame, on a simple background, with strong contrast: a design is seen from two metres away, and fine detail vanishes at that distance. Everything in the file is printed, background included — a JPEG always has an opaque background. For the fabric to show around the subject, cut it out and export as a transparent PNG. Neon colours cannot be reproduced in ink. Crop tight before uploading, and check sharpness at 100% zoom. The t-shirt is a unisex Gildan 64000 Softstyle, S to 2XL, $23.00 shipping included, printed to order closest to your address.

A photo you like on your phone does not necessarily work on a t-shirt. The screen is backlit, smooth, and you hold it thirty centimetres away. A t-shirt is fabric: it moves, it creases, and people look at it from two metres. Many photos lose their subject on the way.

A few rules explain almost every failure. Once you have them in mind, you know in ten seconds whether your photo will work — even if you print nothing with us.

Which photo to choose for a personalised t-shirt

The rule that explains everything else: a t-shirt is read from a distance, a photo is looked at up close. A design printed on a chest is seen from two metres, in motion, often for a second. At that distance your eye picks up one thing only: a shape and a contrast. Everything else drops away.

That rules out a whole family of images: photos full of small, equivalent details. A crowd, a wide landscape, a group of ten, foliage. Nothing dominates, the eye catches on nothing. On a screen you zoom; on a t-shirt you cannot.

What works is the opposite: one subject, big, on a plain background. A dog's muzzle filling the frame. A face cropped tight. A silhouette cut out against a plain sky. A single object. The more empty space around the subject, the more the subject exists.

What stands outWhat disappears
A subject filling at least half the frameA subject far away, lost in the scenery
Plain or very blurred backgroundBusy, textured background full of lines
Strong contrast between subject and backgroundGrey cat on a grey sofa
Two or three dominant coloursFifteen colours in equal parts
Broad, legible shapesFine text, tiny patterns, lace

Subject-to-background contrast deserves a test of its own: switch your photo to black and white. If the subject is still obvious without colour, it will hold up on fabric. If not, colour was the only thing saving it.

One last point about colour: neon cannot be reproduced in ink. Neon pink, acid green, signal yellow glow on a screen because the screen emits light. Ink only reflects ambient light: neon always comes out calmer. It is not a defect, it is physics, and it is true of any printing.

Do I need to cut the photo out before printing?

Not always. But you need to know what gets printed: everything in your file, subject and background included. A rectangular photo is printed as a rectangle, with its background, exactly as you see it.

Your file may look "background-free" to you, but a JPEG cannot hold transparency: it always has an opaque background, usually white. Every pixel has a colour, including the ones that look empty. And when you erase a background in an app and then save as JPEG, the empty area silently becomes a solid colour again. It is not a manufacturing defect: it is your file, printed faithfully.

So you have three clean ways out:

The check takes ten seconds: drop your file on the preview screen and look at the result on the t-shirt. What you see there is what goes to print. The preview is computed in your browser, nothing is sent until you order — you can test ten versions of your file without any of them leaving your device.

Your subject will be smaller than you imagine

Much smaller than what you see looking at your photo full-screen. The design occupies an area in the centre of the chest — and your whole photo has to fit in there, not just its subject.

Do the mental arithmetic: if the face you want to show takes up a sixth of your photo, it will take up a sixth of the printed design. From two metres, nobody will recognise who it is.

The fix costs nothing: crop before uploading. Cut everything that is not the subject — a tight crop does more for legibility than any setting. A recent phone photo usually takes a good crop; an already compressed story screenshot does not. The only reliable test remains 100% zoom: what looks blurry on screen will print blurry. The 30-second pixel test settles it.

The life-size test: display your cropped photo on your phone, hold it against your chest, step back two metres in front of a mirror. What you see there is what others will see.

How to wash a printed t-shirt

The t-shirt in the range is a Gildan 64000 Softstyle, unisex from S to 2XL, printed to order. As with any printed textile, what wears a design is heat and friction: a hot wash, the tumble dryer, an iron placed directly on it.

The four habits that change everything:

If the item arrives damaged or does not match what you ordered, it is reprinted free of charge. A personalised item, however, is exempt from the 14-day right of withdrawal under EU consumer law (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16 c): a simple change of mind is not refunded. One more reason to run the checklist before confirming.

The 5-point checklist before you upload

If your photo fails two or three points and you do not want to rework it, it may make a very good framed print, or a very good mug: paper and ceramic forgive the fine detail that fabric swallows.

The Gildan 64000 Softstyle t-shirt, unisex S to 2XL, is $23.00 shipping included — the price shown is the price paid, from a single item. Printed to order by Gelato, closest to your delivery address; allow 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere, manufacturing included.

Frequently asked questions

What file format should I upload for a t-shirt?
A JPEG is fine in most cases: it is printed as you see it, background included. If you want the fabric to show around the subject, upload a PNG with a transparent background — transparency is not printed. Whatever the format, check the pixel count: a screenshot or a photo received through a messaging app has been shrunk.
Why does the background of my photo print in white?
Because a JPEG cannot hold transparency: every pixel has a colour, including those that look empty. When you erase a background in an app and save as JPEG, the empty area becomes solid colour again, usually white. Export as PNG to keep the transparency.
Will neon colours print as they look on screen?
No. Neon pink, acid green and signal yellow glow on a screen because the screen emits light. Ink only reflects ambient light, so neon always comes out calmer. It is not a defect, it is physics, and it is true of any printing.
How do I wash a printed t-shirt?
Inside out at 30 °C (86 °F); avoid the tumble dryer or use a gentle cycle; no bleach or chlorine stain remover; never iron directly on the print — iron inside out or with a cloth between the iron and the design. Heat and friction are what wear a print.
Which t-shirt is it, and what sizes?
A Gildan 64000 Softstyle, soft lightweight cotton, unisex, sizes S to 2XL, in nine colours. It is printed to order by the Gelato network closest to your delivery address. Shipping is included in the price shown, from a single item.
Can I return a personalised t-shirt if I change my mind?
No: a personalised item is exempt from the 14-day right of withdrawal under EU consumer law (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16 c). A damaged item, or one that does not match what you approved, is reprinted free of charge. Hence the checklist before you confirm.
