A3 or A4: what actually changes

Both calendars have the same content. Only the size changes, and with it the space it takes up on your wall.

The A3 calendar, a little more than the A4: 29.7 × 42 cm (about 11.7 × 16.5 in), or 1,247 cm² of paper per page. Twice the area of an A4, for a small difference in price.
The A4 calendar, : 21 × 29.7 cm, the size of a sheet of printer paper in Europe (a touch narrower and taller than US Letter). More discreet, easier to find room for.
What doesn't change: 14 pages, ring binding, French public holidays marked (if you live elsewhere, your own holidays won't be), and the choice between one photo for the whole year or one photo per month.
What you pay: the price shown, shipping included, no minimum. You can order a single calendar just as easily as ten.

The mathsThe A4 photo calendar costs with shipping included, which is ÷ 12 = about $0.00 per month on the wall; the A3 works out a little more per month. For that small difference, you get twice the area: 29.7 × 42 = 1,247.4 cm² against 21 × 29.7 = 623.7 cm².

Which wall suits an A3

Before you choose, ask yourself one question: where will people look at it from? A calendar gets checked in passing, often from a few steps away.

The hallway or the living room: on a large, bare wall, an A4 looks lost. The A3 holds its own and the photos can be seen from across the room.
At the grandparents': they look at the grandchildren's photos from a distance, often without their glasses. It's the classic A3 gift.
A wall with nothing else on it: the A3 becomes a piece of decor that changes every month, without buying a frame.
Stick with A4 for: the kitchen, a bedroom door, a desk, a narrow bit of wall. And for calendars given as several copies, to keep to the budget.

Not sure? Measure the space with sheets of printer paper: an A3 is two A4 sheets side by side along their long edge. If that spills over, stay with A4.

Twelve photos, large: choosing the ones that hold up in A3

The bigger the size, the more a blurry photo shows. For an A3, take the time to choose sharp photos.

The original file: the photo as it comes off your phone, not the version someone sent you in a chat, nor a screenshot, both of which have lost detail.

Simple photos: a face, a landscape, a pet. On a wall, a group photo of twenty people becomes unreadable, even in A3.

When to order, and mistakes to avoid

Printing and delivery take 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, and up to 15 elsewhere. To give it at Christmas, on Friday 25 December, order before Thursday 10 December in Europe, or in early December from outside Europe (the details are in when to order for Christmas). You can have it delivered straight to the person you're giving it to.

Choosing A3 for a small wall: it spills over and ends up somewhere else. Measure first.
Compressed photos: in A3, a photo saved from a chat looks blurry. Go back to the original.
Twelve near-identical photos: twelve selfies in the same place get old by March. Vary the places and the moments.
Leaving it to the last week: choosing twelve photos takes longer than you think. Start your selection in November.
