Dogs cooperate. Cats negotiate, and usually decline. Everything below is written for that.
1. The bag colour, chosen against the cat
The print is ink in the fibre, not a sticker on top of it, so the fabric shows through the light areas of the photo. The coat and the bag have to disagree.
| Your cat | Bag colour that works | Bag colour to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Black, dark tortoiseshell | Natural, white, red | Black, navy |
| White, cream, pale ginger | Navy, black, red | Natural, white |
| Tabby, grey, brown | Navy or black — the pattern needs strong contrast | Natural |
| Ginger, red tabby | Navy or natural, both work | Red |
The five-second test: squint at the photo until it blurs. If the cat still separates from its background, the contrast is enough. If it becomes one shape, change the bag colour rather than the photo.
2. The background, because fur has no outline
This matters more for cats than for dogs, and especially for long-haired cats. The instinct is to cut the animal out and put it on a clean colour. Every automatic tool does this badly, because it has to decide where the fur ends — and fur does not end, it fades. Whiskers disappear, ear tufts go square, a Maine Coon acquires a white halo you cannot see on a phone and cannot miss at 25 cm across.
The better move is to photograph the cat against something that is already plain: a wall, a sofa in a single colour, a duvet. Two minutes of positioning beats any editing tool, and the real background usually makes the photo more recognisably your cat.
3. Photographing a cat that will not pose
The mistake is trying to arrange the shot: picking the cat up, carrying it to a nice spot, putting it down. You now have an annoyed cat leaving the frame.
Do the opposite.
- Go where it already is. The windowsill, the radiator, the chair it has claimed. It is comfortable there, so it will stay.
- Get down to its level. Lie on the floor if that is where the cat is. A photo taken from standing looks down on the animal and flattens its face.
- Put the light behind you. Near a window, facing it — never with the window behind the cat, or you will get a silhouette.
- Wait, then burst. A cat lifts its head and looks at you for about two seconds. That is the photo. Hold the shutter down and keep one frame out of fifteen.
- No flash. It ruins the eyes, flattens the fur, and you get one shot before the cat leaves.
The classic trick still works: a small noise just before the burst — a bag, a tap on the floor — buys you the head-up moment. Use it once; it does not work twice in the same session.
4. Framing for a 25 × 25 cm (9.8 × 9.8 in) print
The print area on the front panel is large. Fill it with head and chest, not the whole cat in a room. A cat curled into a ball is charming in life and a beige oval at this size.
If your only photo is a wide one, crop tight before judging it: a small sharp crop beats a large soft one every time. Use the original from the camera roll — anything that has been through a chat app has already lost detail.
5. What “printed in Europe” means here
Nothing is stocked. The bag is printed to order by Gelato at the site closest to your delivery address — an order delivered in Europe is printed in Europe, one delivered in the United States is printed in the United States. Count 5 to 10 working days in the UK, Europe and the US, up to 15 elsewhere, shipping included in the price shown.
6. Care, so it lasts
- Cold wash, bag inside out.
- No tumble dryer.
- No iron directly on the print.
- No bleach or fabric softener on the printed area.
Nearly every "the print faded" story comes down to a hot wash or a tumble dryer. Cold and air-dried, a cotton tote outlasts most of what else is in the cupboard.
And if a tote bag is not the right object
| If you want… | Then… | From |
|---|---|---|
| Something used at home every morning | A mug — smaller print, more forgiving of an imperfect photo | $23.00 |
| Something looked at rather than used | A framed print, delivered ready to hang | $55.00 |
Before you order, the preview is computed in your own browser and nothing is transmitted; the print file goes to the printer at payment and is deleted after dispatch. Personalised items are exempt from the standard European right of withdrawal (Directive 2011/83/EU, article 16(c)), and anything that arrives damaged is reprinted at no charge. You must hold the rights to the photo you upload.
